OnePlus 5 & 5T software support ends in China, OxygenOS updates to follow suit?

OnePlus is among the few OEMs that now offer software support for flagship devices for up to 3 major Android updates. This makes sense seeing just how capable out modern flagships have gotten.

This means that devices such as OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T from back in 2017 have been supported for their entire life up until now. The devices that launched with Android 7.1.1 out of the box have since been updated to Android 10-based OxygenOS 10.

When OnePlus released a list of its devices that are eligible for an update to OxygenOS 11, only devices from the OnePlus 6 and newer made the cut and with that, OnePlus 5 and 5T’s days were numbered.

Well, today, OnePlus has made this official by releasing a statement that confirms the company’s intentions to wrap up official software support for the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T.

In the statement, OnePlus goes to reveal that in the 3 years that the devices have been supported, the company has rolled out more than 60 internal betas and more than 30 public beta versions.

At present , the stable version update of OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T has officially ended in the fourth edition. At the end of this journey, we sincerely thank the cheering people for their continuous positive feedback and suggestions for accompanying the growth of Hydrogen OS.

With that, OnePlus is calling it a wrap for the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T in its home market of China with its HydrogenOS custom Android skin.

Knowing OnePlus and how the company handles its updates, users should expect the same courtesy to be extended to users in other markets running OxygenOS. It remains unclear when exactly this OnePlus 5 software support will be cut for OxygenOS devices but it shouldn’t be long.

These two devices have undoubtedly had a good run. While the device is still pretty popular among budget gamers and users in the market for a second-hand device, there’s still a need for support.

This is where the developer community swiftly comes in. Already, we’ve seen a bunch of Android 11-based custom ROMs for the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T.

Some of the ones we’ve already looked at include, but not limited to YAAS and Pixel Experience. There are bound to me a lot more ROMs for these devices so keep an eye on the developer forums.

If these users are lucky, they should even get an OxygenOS 11 port for their devices, but that is a few months away, if it ever gets ready in the first place.

For now though, it is up to the other Android OEMs to borrow a leaf and hop onto the 3-year Android support schedule that currently boasts of members like OnePlus, Google and Samsung.
