[Update: Dec. 10] Nokia 3.1 Plus update status: Here’s what we know so far

nokia 3.1 plus feat

This story is being continuously updated…. New updates are being added at the bottom…..

Original story (published on August 26, 2020) follows:

Nokia unveiled the Nokia 3.1 Plus back in October 2018. The device is powered by the MediaTek MT6762 Helio P22 coupled with 2-3GB of RAM and a 3500mAh battery. The device ran Android 8.1.1 Oreo out of the box and has since received regular updates and a few Android version updates.

Being part of the Android One program, the Nokia 3.1 Plus is expected to bag at least two updates and as such, is in line for an update to Android 10. However, that is where things begin to get a little hazy for users of the 3.1 Plus.

Back in late May, we saw the Nokia 3.1 Plus officially get updated to Android 10. This update brought with it all the features we expect from Android 10 and the April 2020 security patch.

However, all was not well with this build as users soon started complaining of issues such as push notifications not working correctly among many other little bugs. Nokia came through and pushed the May security patch based on Android 10, supposedly meant to address the issues in the initial rollout.

Even then, Nokia 3.1 Plus users started reporting issues when installing this May update, some not being able to update their Nokia 3.1 Plus to Android 10 at all. With that, we now had two groups of Nokia 3.1 Plus users; a section that was running Android 10 and a good number that were unable to update to Android 10.

As a result, HMD seemingly halted the rollout of Android 10, effectively solidifying these two groups of users. Nokia then proceeded to push the May security patch and later June security patch based on Android Pie to the 3.1 Plus a month later.

Fast-forward to the present day and at the time of writing, Nokia is yet to re-release Android 10 for the Nokia 3.1 Plus. With that, there is a group of Nokia 3.1 Plus users that successfully updated their devices to Android 10 and they’re stuck with the April or May 2020 security patch.

Nokia continues to roll out regular Android 9-based security patch updates to the Nokia 3.1 Plus and at the time of writing, users with Nokia 3.1 Plus running Android 9 Pie can update their devices to the June 2020 security patch.

Even as that happens, frustration continues to mount among device owners. These users have taken to various platforms demanding answers from Nokia, but the company has remained quiet on the situation, leaving users in limbo.

Update 1 (September 01)

IST: 05:32 pm: Being part of the Android One program, we expected some fast-paced updates for the Nokia 3.1 Plus but the device is yet to get hold of the Android 10. Nokia has just started pushing August security patch update based on Android Pie and the users may need to wait a little longer for the Android 10 update to arrive.

If you wish to manually update your device, we have included the download link in the full story, here.

Update 2 (November 20)

IST: 05:32 pm: Apparantely, an error slipped through via the Android 10 update for Nokia 3.1 Plus devices which prevents the devices from receiving over-the-air software updates as normal.

Fortunately, Nokia has acknowledged the problem via a post on its community forums and has also shared details on how the company is fixing it.

Users whose devices are on version 00WW_3_15H or 00WW_3_15H_SP01 are affected by the issue and must follow the steps provided by Nokia in order to resolve the problem.

1. Connect your Nokia 3.1 Plus to the internet. WiFi is preferable.
2. Your device will receive and install the update automatically.
3. Your device will restart itself as part of the installation.
4. When you next use your device, you are likely to see a notification about a failed update. However, on this occasion, that means the update was successful!
5. You do not need to press the “Try again” button.
6. The error notification may keep coming through while we our rolling out the fix to other devices. After the fix rollout period, these notifications will stop.

Nokia has even claimed that it will assist users who miss out on installing the OTA update by providing additional instructions.

As long as you connect your Nokia 3.1 Plus to the internet, your device should automatically receive the update. We will have to stop the OTA rollout eventually, but if you miss it, don’t worry. We’ll follow up with further instructions on how to resolve this issue in case you miss out on the OTA update.

While this is an unfortunate incident, it’s good to see Nokia step up and own its mistake rather than making users wait for an indefinite amount of time for a fix.

Update 3 (December 10)

IST: 06:20 pm: It seems that the issue has finally been resolved since users who encountered the problem initially have bagged a new software update as version V3.15K which carries the October patch.
